Description

This blue starry night hex tile reproduces Van Gogh’s view of the Rhône at Arles, painted in September 1888. He set up his easel right on the riverbank a few minutes from his home, worked at night by gaslight, and caught the town’s lamps throwing long gold reflections down into the water.

I chose this piece for the way the color does all the work. Deep blues and violets fill the sky and water, broken up by thick, visible brushstrokes that give the whole scene motion even though nothing in it is actually moving. The gas lamps along the embankment read as small gold-green bursts, and two figures stand quietly in the foreground, barely more than a few strokes each. On the hex shape, that river bends naturally into the panel’s angles.

Van Gogh painted his night skies more than once, but this one holds a kind of stillness the others don’t. It’s a scene of an ordinary evening walk turned into something that still stops people in museums well over a century later. I like having that kind of quiet, working-class beauty on a wall instead of something that demands attention.

This tile pairs well with other pieces from the Art History Collection for a small gallery wall built around movement and color, or works on its own as a single anchor piece in a reading nook or over a desk. It’s also a solid gift for anyone who’s ever stood in front of the original at the Musée d’Orsay and wanted a piece of that feeling at home.

Available from 1.5 inches up to 18 inches.
