Zenith Climbers

Description

This teal climbing hex tile started with a simple question: what does it actually feel like to climb? Not just the physical part, but that push and pull between you and the wall, where you come together in a hold, separate to reach for the next one, and come together again. I built this piece around that rhythm, inspired by Zenith Climbing Center right here in Springfield.

The wall itself is made of angular teal and tan panels layered with henna-style linework, and little bursts of pink, gold, and blue scattered across it like chalk dust in the air. The climbers are drawn in that same detailed style, some still waiting at the bottom, some already partway up the face. It is a small scene, but it moves.

My son took a climbing class at Zenith, and I only meant to help him out, so I learned to belay. Then I started climbing with him. Now my husband climbs too, and somehow this became a whole family thing. The community at Zenith is a special one, and I am genuinely glad to be part of it. You might catch us on a Tuesday for what we call “family climbing taco Tuesday”, learning something new on the wall and then ending the night with some well deserved sombrero tacos!
