This image is a reproduction of “An Old Song” (1874), a watercolor, gum arabic, and gouache work by Irish-American artist William John Hennessy (1839–1917). The painting depicts a woman seated at a piano, lost in the quiet intimacy of music — a tender, contemplative scene rendered with the delicate detail and warm sentiment that characterized the best Victorian genre painting. It’s the kind of image that makes a room feel a little softer and a little more civilized. The original is held in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

Hennessy was born in Thomastown, County Kilkenny, Ireland, and emigrated to New York as a child. He gained admittance to the National Academy of Design in 1854 and became highly skilled in wood engraving, illustrating the works of celebrated poets including Tennyson, Longfellow, and Whittier. His work bridges the American and British artistic traditions of the Victorian era with quiet grace.
