Description
This vintage wheel hex tile features a close-up photograph, taken sometime in the early 1900s, of a wire-spoke automobile wheel and its ribbed whitewall tire.
The photographer got in tight enough that the wheel fills almost the entire frame, spokes crossing in a dense pattern toward the center hub, with the tire’s manufacturer name still legible along its edge. It’s a purely mechanical subject, but there’s something satisfying about the geometry of it, all those thin metal spokes radiating out in perfect tension. Early automobiles still leaned heavily on bicycle and carriage-making techniques, and this wheel shows that inheritance clearly.
I included this piece because early automotive photography rarely gets its due compared to the cars themselves. There’s real craftsmanship in a wheel like this, built by hand at a time when the automobile industry was still figuring itself out.
This tile is a strong pick for a garage, a man cave, or any space built around classic cars and mechanical history. Pair it with one of my hexagon frames for display.
Available from 1.5 inches up to 18 inches.
