Description
This full moon hex tile reproduces an 1885 photographic study of the moon, showing its cratered surface in careful detail against a deep black sky.
This image predates any actual photograph taken from space, which makes the level of surface detail genuinely impressive. Astronomers and photographers of the era worked from telescope observation and detailed plaster models to produce prints like this one, capturing the mountain ranges, crater rims, and radiating light streaks across the lunar surface with real scientific accuracy. The greenish-toned print gives the whole thing a slightly otherworldly cast that a plain black and white version wouldn’t have.
I like this piece because it sits right at the intersection of art and early science, made by people working hard to understand something they couldn’t yet actually visit.
This tile works well in a bedroom, a nursery, a study, or anywhere leaning toward space and astronomy. It’s a strong gift for anyone into stargazing or science history. Finish it off with one of my hexagon frames.
Available from 1.5 inches up to 18 inches.
