Description

This astronaut hex tile was born under a real sky. Bridget Koonce drew it while camping with her son and a group of great friends — the kind of night where the sky was so inspiring she couldn’t stop until it was done. You can feel that in the piece. The entire background is a dense, swirling cosmos of hand-drawn waves and currents in black, teal, red, pink, and blue, punctuated by planets, spirals, a small rocket, star bursts, and glowing orbs that drift through the dark like something between a dream and a star map. At the bottom, a lone astronaut stands on a rust-colored alien surface, looking up at all of it. Just looking. Taking it in.

That figure — small, still, dwarfed by the universe above — captures something true about what it feels like to lie under a really good night sky. You are very small. Everything is very large. And somehow that’s not terrifying. It’s the opposite of terrifying.

The detail in this piece is extraordinary. The background alone contains hundreds of individual hand-drawn marks — each wave, each spiral, each glowing dot placed by hand during what must have been one of those rare evenings where the work and the moment are perfectly aligned. It’s one of the most ambitious and personal pieces Bridget has made.

This tile is UV printed on 1/8″ Baltic birch wood for a warm, natural finish that makes the colors pop. The back is engraved with the HexWallTiles website. It comes as a standalone tile — you can use sticky tack to apply it directly to your wall, or pair it with one of our hexagon frames for a more finished look. Frames, necklaces, and all other hexagon accessories are sold separately.
