Mother and child

Description

This red cubist hex tile captures one of the oldest subjects in art: mother and child, curled together, one form wrapped fully around the other. It reproduces a 1933 painting by Slovak modernist artist Mikuláš Galanda, originally titled Mother, and sometimes known as Pink Madonna.

The mother and child sit built from soft, rounded shapes rather than sharp cubist angles, which gives the whole piece a gentler, more tender read than a lot of modernist figure work carries. The mother’s head bows down over the child’s, her arm wraps completely around its small curled form, and a field of deep crimson presses close around them both. Every line in this composition bends back toward that single point of contact between mother and child, like nothing else in the frame matters.

Galanda worked at a moment when artists across Central Europe were breaking traditional figure painting apart and rebuilding it in new, simplified shapes. He nodded to centuries of Madonna and Child imagery with this piece’s original title, while stripping away every trace of religious iconography and leaving just the mother and child bond underneath, raw and unadorned. That’s exactly why I wanted it in the collection. It’s not a Madonna painting anymore. It’s just a mother and child, rendered honestly.
