Description
This blue armor hex tile reproduces a German illuminated manuscript page from around 1560 to 1570, showing a knight in full plate armor rendered in tempera colors with real gold and silver paint.
The armor is painted in cool blue with warm gold trim running down every joint and seam, and the artist clearly knew how armor actually moves, since the knight strides forward with one hand on his hip and the other gripping a sword. The gold and silver paint would have caught candlelight in the original manuscript, and even in reproduction it still gives the piece a metallic shimmer that flat printed color usually can’t manage.
I like this one for what it captures about craftsmanship. Someone spent real time getting every strap, hinge, and plate exactly right, working at a scale small enough to fit in a hand-held book. That kind of patient detail work is the same spirit I try to bring to each tile I cut and print.
This tile works well in a study, office, or anywhere you want a bit of old-world weight on the wall. It pairs naturally with other pieces from the Getty Collection, especially if you’re building a wall around history or armor and weaponry specifically. Finish it with one of my hexagon frames.
Available from 1.5 inches up to 18 inches.
