Description

This black and white ballerina hex tile reproduces an early 1900s photograph, taken by the Los Angeles studio Fleckenstein, of a dancer caught mid-pose on pointe.

The photograph freezes real motion. Her arms sweep in opposite directions, her skirt lifts with the movement, and her gaze follows her outstretched hand rather than the camera. That kind of captured instant is hard to get right even now, and this was shot on film with none of the shortcuts a modern camera gives you. The aged sepia tone across the whole image adds a warmth that a straight black and white print wouldn’t have.

I picked this piece because dance photography from this era doesn’t get nearly enough attention compared to studio portraiture. It’s technically demanding and genuinely beautiful, and this dancer’s control comes through clearly even in a single still frame.

This tile is a natural fit for a dance studio, a young dancer’s bedroom, or a hallway gallery wall built around movement and performance. It’s also a thoughtful gift for a dance teacher who’s earned something nicer than another certificate on the wall. Pair it with one of my hexagon frames for a finished look.

Available from 1.5 inches up to 18 inches.
