Description

This Sioux portrait hex tile reproduces an 1899 photograph of George Little Wound, a Sioux man photographed in a full feathered headdress, holding a decorated pipe against his shoulder.

The headdress alone carries real weight in the composition, trailing feathers extending well past the frame’s edge, each one marked with small painted details. His beaded vest catches light across geometric patterns, and the fringe along his sleeve moves with real texture even in a still photograph. He’s photographed at a slight angle, gaze fixed somewhere off-camera, which gives the portrait a sense of presence rather than posed stillness.

I included this piece because portraits like this one deserve to be seen at real scale and with real respect, not reduced to a small archival thumbnail.

This tile fits well in a study, living room, or any wall built around historical portraiture. It’s a meaningful piece for anyone interested in Native American history and material culture. Pair it with one of my hexagon frames.

Available from 1.5 inches up to 18 inches.
