Description

This vintage kitchen hex tile reproduces a 1939 photograph of a woman making biscuits in her farmhouse kitchen in Granville County, North Carolina, taken as part of a documentary photography project covering rural American life.

The whole scene is full of real, lived-in detail: a crock jar and a bucket of shortening on the open shelf, a bowl of biscuit dough on the counter, mismatched pots and pans stacked nearby. She’s photographed from behind, apron strings tied at her back, fully absorbed in the work in front of her. There’s nothing staged about it. This is what an ordinary kitchen actually looked like for a lot of working families at the time.

I picked this piece because I think that kind of everyday domestic labor deserves a place on the wall as much as any grand historical scene. It’s honest, unglamorous work, and there’s real dignity in it.

This tile fits naturally in a farmhouse kitchen, a dining room, or anywhere leaning toward rural or vintage Americana. It’s a meaningful gift for anyone who bakes or cooks from scratch. Add one of my hexagon frames to finish it.

Available from 1.5 inches up to 18 inches.
