Description

This George Washington hex tile reproduces an 1870s photographic copy of Gilbert Stuart’s famous portrait, one of the most recognized images of an American president ever painted.

Stuart’s original portrait became the template for how generations of Americans have pictured Washington, right down to the version printed on the one-dollar bill. This photographic reproduction, made decades after the original painting, shows how far that image traveled once photography made it possible to copy and distribute paintings at scale. The soft, warm sepia tone and slightly faded quality give this print its own vintage character separate from the painting it’s copied from.

I wanted this piece available because Washington’s portrait is genuinely part of the American visual vocabulary, recognizable practically on sight, and it holds up as a strong piece of portraiture regardless of the history behind it.

This tile fits well in a home office, a study, or anywhere leaning toward American history. It’s a solid gift for history teachers or veterans. Pair it with one of my hexagon frames, or with pieces from the Springfield Landmarks line for a broader Americana theme.

Available from 1.5 inches up to 18 inches.
