Description

This pink flamingo hex tile reproduces John James Audubon’s American Flamingo, one of 435 hand-colored engravings from his massive Birds of America project, completed across the 1820s and 1830s.

Audubon painted his birds close to life-size and in natural poses, which was unusual for the field guides of his time. Since a flamingo can stand up to five feet tall, he had to bend this one over, neck curved down toward the water, to fit the page. That choice ended up giving the piece its whole sense of motion. The magenta-pink body dominates the frame, with a small flock of paler flamingos wading in the background marsh below.

I like this piece because it’s not a stiff specimen drawing. Audubon wanted people to see birds the way they actually move and behave in the wild, not pinned flat on a page, and that intention still comes through clearly here almost two centuries later.

This tile works well in a coastal-themed room, a bathroom leaning into pink or tropical tones, or a nature-focused gallery wall. It’s also a fun, slightly unexpected housewarming gift for anyone who loves birding, Florida, or just a genuinely striking pop of color on a wall. Finish it off with one of my hexagon frames.

Available from 1.5 inches up to 18 inches.
